forgiveness

Forgiveness is not necessarily a feeling of ease, comfort or affection towards those who have wronged you. Those come as a result of three active principles: forgiveness, repentance and reconciliation. Forgiveness is praying, thinking, speaking and acting in the best eternal interests of your offender no matter your own cost.

section 1

the heart of forgiveness

i corinthians 13:5  nlt

{Love} keeps no record of being wronged.

return

Forgiveness is a product of Christ’s love that is in us  i peter 4:8  esv   ii corinthians 5:14-16  esv . That is the whole why and how of forgiveness.

Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.

return

ii corinthians 5:14-16  esv

For the love of Christ controls us, because we have concluded this: that One has died for all, therefore all have died; and He died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for Him Who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard Him thus no longer.

section 2

ephesians 4:31-32  esv

Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.

Freely we have been forgiven, so freely we should forgive  matthew 10:8  nas . So, it would be a betrayal of God and transgression to not forgive others for that is insulting the Spirit of Grace  matthew 18:21-35   hebrews 10:29  csb .

matthew 6:14-15  esv

For if you forgive others their trespasses, your Heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.

We are commanded to forgive. So, it is to the offended’s glory to overlook an offense  proverbs 19:11  esv  and work towards the offender’s restoration, especially when they do not deserve it  ii samuel 14:14  nlt , because of the desire for reconciliation  ii corinthians 2:4  nlt   luke 15:20  nlt . But overlooking a sin is not pretending it did not happen; it is in spite of the offense to still look to the eternal interests of the one who offended you  james 5:19-20  esv . So, precautions  ii timothy 4:14-15  niv84 , justice  romans 12:17-21  nlt , separation  philemon 15  nas , and even severe discipline might be a necessary part of that process  i corinthians 5:5  esv .

Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all that you can to live in peace with everyone. Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, "I will take revenge; I will pay them back," says the LORD.

Instead, "If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads." Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

forgiveness without repentance

matthew 18:35  esv

So also My heavenly Father will do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother from your heart.

return

Forgiveness must always start in our heart because of our relationship with the Lord, not from some other person’s appropriate response to their sin. Forgiveness is a choice {not a feeling} to willingly give to one what is needed, especially when they do not deserve it. We are to forgive from the heart always, whether the offender repents and seeks to be reconciled or not  mark 11:25  esv .

If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.

6 Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? 7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. 8 Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

9 I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— 10 not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. 11 But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. 12 For what have I to do with judging outsiders? the covenant of forgiveness, the path to genuine reconciliation

Pay attention to yourselves! If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him, and if he sins against you seven times in the day, and turns to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive him."

When someone admits his fault and renounces it  proverbs 28:13  niv84 , forgiveness takes on the added form of an understanding or covenant  amos 3:3  nkjv . Whether this is spoken in a casual, "I’m sorry." "It’s ok." way or in a more formal "I confess that I…and I will never do it again. Please, forgive me." "I forgive you." manner  hosea 14:1-2  esv ; essential to this understanding towards genuine reconciliation is the genuine confession and renouncement  job 34:31-33  nlt   jeremiah 3:13  esv  and reaffirmation of true love  ii corinthians 2:6-8  esv . When these have authentically taken place, you have agreed together to reconcile. You the offended have agreed to forgive. So be careful not to "resolve" a matter before it is truly resolved (See Reconciliation Study).

in forgiveness, we should purpose to:

-NOT bring the matter up again to the other person

-NOT bring the matter up to others

-NOT dwell on it in your own mind  psalm 103:12  esv   isaiah 43:25  esv

Erringly, in hopes of restoring a relationship without embarrassment and with ease we are often quick to simply say, "Its ok.", and then try to pretend nothing happened. Then all parties have a hard time finding true peace with each other because no one seems sure of the state and foundation of the relationship. Forgiveness is working for what’s best for the other. So, for the sake of the offender, when uncertainty and lack of proof remains of one’s sincerity of repentance then room for evidence  ii corinthians 7:11  esv   ii corinthians 9:13  nlt  and making amends  luke 19:8  nlt  must be given so the relationship can be truly restored.
